Chapter 286 Serena's body trembled again.

William noticed and frowned.

"Mr. Weatherly," he said, "go take a moment to gather your thoughts. And Miss Chatham, I'd appreciate it if you could step out as well." Gabrielle opened her mouth to protest, but Giles gently pulled her away before she could say a word.

Only when they rounded the corner did Giles finally let her go.

"What's your problem?" Gabrielle snapped. "Serena needsright now!" Giles regarded her coolly, his eyes unreadable as he looked her up and down. "Are you sure you know how to comfort Serena?" Gabrielle fell silent.

She and Serena had been friends back in middle school, but ever since high school, their lives had taken different paths.

Now, after all these years, it was obvious to Gabrielle that Serena had changed- she was nothing like the girl she'd once known.

So, was she really the right person to console Serena? Gabrielle wasn't sure she could.

Especially considering how much Serena adored her father. To find out she'd been responsible for his death- Gabrielle couldn't even imagine how devastated Serena must be.

"If you can't help," Giles said quietly, "then cwith me." Still worried, Gabrielle pressed herself against the wall and peeked back around the corner.

She caught sight of William gently patting Serena's shoulder. Though she couldn't hear what he was saying, there was a softness in his expression she'd never seen before. The warmth was genuine, nothing like his usual, carefully composed politeness. It was as if a glacier had finally melted, washing away every trace of distance.

Relieved, Gabrielle allowed Giles to lead her away.

Meanwhile, at the staircase- Bella paced anxiously. "Mr. Leighton," she pressed, "didn't you promise you'd help us win this case? Why do you suddenly seem powerless now that Giles is involved?" Nestor's face was grim.

Three years ago, he'd won not because Giles had been unworthy, but because he'd set up the perfect trap.

He'd made a nfor himself quickly after graduating law school, bursting onto the legal scene. But it hadn't taken long to realize just how many sharks were in the water To reach the top, he couldn't afford a single loss. People only remembered your last defeat, not your victories.

So, Nestor made it his mission to win every case, regardless of the side he was on. In just six months, he'd becthe most sought-after attorney in Northspire.

That's when he'd first crossed paths with Giles. That trial had been a 6 sasto I.ne for Nestor-he'd lost so badly it was humiliating, an experience he'd never had before.

Ever since, Giles had bechis nemesis. But not once had Nestor managed to beat him.

Clients began to doubt his competence. The pressure gnawed at him.

Desperate, he set a trap-a final case against Giles. After that Giles M vanished from his life, and Nestor's career soared, untouched by shadows.

Until now.

The thought of Giles reentering his world made Nestor shudder.

No. He couldn't allow it.

Just then, the door behind him creaked open.

Startled, Nestor spun around to see Penelope. He frowned. "Mrs. Brooks-" "Mr. Leighton, it's time. Court is about to begin." He hesitated.

Penelope offered him a faint, confident smile. Her eyes were rimmed with red, but behind them" ed, flickered a cold, almost venomous gleam."Serena will give up those antiques willingly-if she truly loves her father." The last words cout almost as a murmur.

Nestor and Bella exchanged a puzzled glance, not understanding what Penelope meant.
