Chapter 112 Did You Find Out if It's a Boy or a Girl? "Don't think you're the only one blessed with the gift of raising children," Lily retorted. "My son will soon return, and I'll introduce him to a wealthy young woman from a distinguished family. He'll marry, have children, and continue the Davis legacy, making his grandfather proud." The importance of continuing the bloodline was paramount in affluent families. At that moment, Lily was begrudgingly watching Penelope bask in the limelight, a sight she found hard to stomach. Secretly, she hoped Penelope would give birth to a girl, posing less of a threat to her and her son. After all, a daughter couldn't inherit the family estate like a son could. The position of heir was still up for grabs. "By the way, Penelope," Lily interjected, "Did you find out the gender during your ultrasound?" Penelope replied, "It's too early to tell. Besides, I have no intention of finding out." "Why not?" "Whether it's a boy or a girl, it doesn't matter to me. They're my child either way." Lily scoffed, "That sounds nice, but deep down, you're probably hoping for a boy, aren't you?" Choosing not to engage further with Penelope, Lily decided to check on the kitchen. As she was leaving, Penelope casually asked, "What about that test you did forlast time? You should at least letknow the results, right?" The mention of the test irked Lily. Penelope was clearly carrying Kelvin's child but had acted scared and worried, leading her to suspect something fishy, only to discover it was a false alarm. "It's nothing worth mentioning!" Lily retorted brusquely as she walked away, "Don't get too cocky, Penelope!" But Penelope was far from feeling victorious. To the outside world, she was living a glamorous life, marrying into wealth, and never wanting for anything. But the truth? Her life was riddled with sorrow and hardship. "Baby, oh, my little one," Penelope whispered to her unborn child, "Mom is so tired. There were times I wanted to give up, to end it all. But then I think of you, and I find the strength. Your dad will find us, right? Even if... if he never comes, we'll make it on our own."Half an hour later, Grandpa and Kelvin returned to the living room. The old man looked upset, but Kelvin was as calm as ever. Lily's heart fluttered anxiously, "Grandpa, is everything...?" "Let's eat and not discuss it!" Kelvin responded, "I'm not hungry; I should get going, Grandpa." "What did you say?" Kelvin stood up, reaching out to help Penelope off the couch, a slight smile playing on his lips, "Penelope mentioned she's craving straditional food from a well- known spot. I'm taking her there now." Penelope was taken aback, "..." When did she ever say that? Kelvin was using her as a shield! And he called her... Penelope? She felt a chill run down her spine -it was just so cringeworthy! "Don't try to fool me," Grandpa wasn't one to be easily manipulated, "I haven't heard her say anything to you." Kelvin showed him his phone: "A text message." "You...fine then! Pregnant women do get cravings. For Penelope's sake, I'll let it go." Grandpa waved his hand in agreement. "Thanks for understanding, Grandpa." Kelvin wrapped his arm around Penelope's waist and led her towards the exit. Their affectionate display... Grandpa found it quite touching. It was quite a sight indeed. But Penelope had no choice but to go along with it, barely daring to make a move.It wasn't until they'd left the old house that she managed to struggle slightly: "Letgo." But Kelvin's grip only tightened: "What is it?" "Grandpa can't see us. You can letgo now." "You seem even thinner, Penelope." She paused, replying almost instinctively: "How could I possibly be getting thinner if things were going so well? I'm pregnant, you know..." She was trying hard to eat well and stay healthy. Whether it was her physique or her genuine hardships, she wasn't sure. Kelvin escorted her to the car, opened the door for her, and buckled her seatbelt with his own hands. Penelope felt even less capable of movement. What was he up to now...?"We're getting food," Kelvin said, "Let's go, Penelope." Penelope swallowed hard: "Can you act like you usually do?" This version of Kelvin made her feel more scared, more anxious. He raised an eyebrow: "Not used to it?" "No..." "Penelope, you really don't know what's good for you." Kelvin's face turned stern, and he walked around to take the driver's seat. Penelope breathed a sigh of relief; this was the Kelvin she was used to. The earlier behavior... it was as if he had taken the wrong medicine. And Kelvin did take her for sfood, to a nondescript little shop by the roadside. The tables were greasy, the chairs were basic, and the owners were constantly busy. A man like Kelvin, stylish and handsome, seemed oddly out of place in this little shop. "Do you chere often?" Penelope asked. "It's been years," he admitted. She found it strange; a place like this seemed to be something he wouldn't even glance at."Here," the owner said briskly, serving up the steaming dish. Penelope couldn't wait to taste them but scalded her mouth on the first bite. She quickly stuck out her tongue, fanning it with her hand. "Idiot," Kelvin said, passing her a napkin. "I didn't expect them to be so hot." "Eat slowly; no one's competing with you." Penelope blew on the small morsel she held, her fingers cautious and gentle, before taking a tentative bite. "Wow... this is actually really good." They looked unassuming, yet the wrapper was delicately thin, the filling savory, and the broth rich. She finished the bowl in no time. Kelvin, on the other hand, had only made his way through half of his. Coming from the Davis family, known for their strict upbringing, he ate with an elegance and slowness born out of extensive training in table manners. "What are you looking at?" Kelvin glanced up, meeting her gaze. "What?" "I... I could really go for another bowl," she admitted, her cheeks blooming with a shy redness. They were delicious, and she was famished. Kelvin paused before signaling the waiter, "Another bowl, please." "Coming right up." On the drive back to The King Manor, Penelope rubbed her swollen belly-she had overdone it, surely. Kelvin shot her a look and teased, "Pig." She remained silent, swallowing her pride-he did pick up the tab, after all. As the car pulled into the garden, Penelope reached for the door, but suddenly Kelvin's arm tightened around her waist, pulling her back. She had barely settled in when his lips descended on hers. It was a siege. Penelope was still bewildered when she felt his soft lips for a solid ten seconds before remembering to push him away. "Wait, stop... you...." she mumbled, her attempts at speaking only granting him more access. His taste was all over her. She beat at his shoulders, pleading, "No... don't..." Trying to turn her head away was futile; Kelvin forcefully held it steady, refusing her any retreat. And then, without warning, he reclined the passenger seat. With a gasp, Penelope was sprawled back... Flat.
