Chapter 115 Fiona's Web of Deceit The entrance of Brandon into her life was akin to a sunflower reaching for the radiant sun. He was her guiding light, her savior during the darkest of times.
As the curtain of night fell, Penelope, exhausted, returned to the King Estate. After cleaning up, she slipped on her headphones as was her routine. Fiona's voice filtered through, and she listened intently, her pencil poised above the paper as she sketched absentmindedly. However, when the patriarch's voice crackled through the headphones, her pencil stilled mid-stroke. Every word held her captive, her focus unwavering, terrified of missing even the smallest piece of information. The conversation was brief, a mere thirty minutes, but it laid bare an elaborate scheme. A trap had been set by her own father and sister, with Penelope as the unsuspecting pawn. Two phrases, in particular, caught Penelope's attention. "Take it step by step. After all, she has no clue whose child it really is." And "Dad, I'm telling you, even I can't bear it. Been hurting for days. Yet, she takes a tumble while pregnant and acts like it's nothing."Penelope was in the dark about the child's father, a fact the patriarch and Fiona were well aware of. But the second phrase left her puzzled. Why was Fiona referring to herself as an ordinary person? And why did she claim that after falling down the stairs, she was merely in pain for a few days, whereas Penelope, a pregnant woman, seemed unfazed? Something was amiss. With bated breath, Penelope's mind raced. Fiona wasn't an ordinary person. She was supposed to be pregnant. Yes, Penelope was pregnant, but so was Fiona or so they claimed. The patriarch's concern was solely for Fiona's wellbeing, not a word about the supposed miscarriage. An ordinary person versus a pregnant woman... Then it hit her like a lightning bolt. Everything fell into place. Fiona was never pregnant. There was no pregnancy, no miscarriage. Fiona's complaints to the patriarch about the pain and bruises from her fall were the true extent of her injuries. There was no miscarriage to be concerned about, nor any worries about future childbirth.A miscarriage often leads to significant physical trauma, and women typically need a confinement period to recover. Without proper care, future pregnancies could be at risk. Yet Fiona was completely indifferent. "I've got it, I've got it..." Penelope leapt to her feet, realization washing over her. "No pregnancy, no miscarriage—it's all Fiona's ruse, a ploy to win Kelvin's affection and causeharm!" She ripped off her headphones and dashed towards the exit. The moment to expose Fiona's deception had finally arrived.Faking a pregnancy and miscarriage was a grave deceit. She couldn't believe Kelvin would allow Fiona to remain by his side after such a betrayal. Kelvin, a tycoon accustomed to authority, despised nothing more than deception and treachery. Fiona had crossed a line. With fists clenched and determination fueling her steps, Penelope hurried towards the house. However, Kelvin was nowhere to be found. Resolute, she stepped out the door, only to collide with someone's embrace. A deep, resonant voice sounded from above, "In a hurry to fall into my arms?""Kelvin!" Penelope looked up at him, her eyes shining. "You're back! I've been looking for you!"Talk about perfect timing. She had been on the verge of driving to the office to find him. She couldn't wait a second longer to address this matter. Seeing her bright eyes, Kelvin's heart skipped a beat. Penelope rarely displayed such an expression in front of him. Anticipation, hope she was vibrant and beautiful. Was she really this eager to see him? Kelvin felt his mood lift unconsciously, a smile tugging at his lips. His voice softened as he asked, "Looking for me?""Yeah." Penelope nodded. "Why are you back so late, working overtime?""Uh-huh, had a meeting."Penelope reached out and tugged at the hem of his shirt. "I need to talk to you, do you have a moment?"Kelvin found it hard to resist her. There was something undeniably captivating about her gentleness and charm. But beauty could be intoxicating. Kelvin was usually rational, but after a brief moment of confusion, he slowly regained his senses. Looking down, he noticed her hand on him."Uh...sorry." Penelope quickly retracted her hand, even smoothing out his shirt for good measure. "Got a bit carried away." The thought of exposing Fiona's true colors in front of Kelvin filled her with an indescribable excitement and anticipation."What's got you so excited?" Kelvin walked toward the living room. "Spill it."Penelope was genuinely thrilled, unable to hide it at all. She followed behind him until he settled on the couch, then she began, "I've uncovered a secret. Or rather, I've found a way to prove my innocence."Kelvin was quick to understand. "Does this have to do with Fiona?""Yes. I didn't push her down those stairs, nor did I have any ill intentions. It was all an act put on by her, framing me!""Where's the evidence?""The evidence... it's on Fiona herself."Kelvin's eyes narrowed slightly. "What do you mean?""I need Fiona to chere now, for a face-to- face confrontation." Penelope was clear and concise. "Not only did she frme, but she also told an enormous lie!"Her voice echoed through the living room. Her expression and tone were resolute. Kelvin and Penelope locked eyes for a moment. After a brief silence, he turned to the butler, "Go, call Fiona.""Yes, Mr. Davis. "Penelope's hand clenched unconsciously, her palm sweating. Kelvin said no more, sitting with his legs crossed and fidgeting with an unlit cigarette. So that was it- her excitement stemmed from having something to hold over Fiona's head. He had thought... that Penelope was looking forward to his return home. But that was just wishful thinking on his part.Fiona, taken aback by the phone call, asked with a hint of confusion, "Mr. Davis wants to seeat The King Estate?" "Yes, Mrs. Wright, please cover as soon as you can." "Did Mr. Davis mention what it's about?" "No, he did not." Knowing that the butler had never been fond of her and wouldn't disclose anything further, Fiona promptly ended the call.
A sense of unease nagged at her. Mr.
Davis had never summoned her so abruptly without specifying the m reason. With trepidation Fiona arrived at the King Estate. She approached Mr. Davis with a forced smile, despite her anxiety, and bantered, "Mr. Davis, did you miss me? I rushed right over when I got your call. What's up?"Kelvin replied coolly, "Take a seat."
