Chapter 572 When she got back in the car, the call still wouldn't go through.
Sylvie stared at the phone screen for what felt like ages. Something inside her- scertainty was beginning to unravel. Her lips pressed into a thin line, and though cold sweat broke out across her brow, she kept trying to dial.
Maybe... maybe he just hadn't seen it yet? She tried again. And again. The sendless cycle.
No answer. Not even a hint that he meant to pick up.
Bit by bit, the color drained from Sylvie's face. All at once, she hurled the phone onto the passenger seat, then slumped forward, resting her head against the steering wheel.
She stayed like that for a long time.

Her only gain was drawing Jarrod's attention, clinging to him with that new identity-whatever it took to keep him close. Chances were, Jarrod was already caught in her web.
Just like her mother had warned.
Elodie was even more shameless than Sylvie had imagined.
Eventually, Sylvie managed to compose herself. She hadn't wanted to bother Jarrod before, but now it was clear- sthings couldn't be left alone any longer.
Elodie, meanwhile, knew nothing of Sylvie's situation. She only knew that, as one of the alleged victims, she'd have to cooperate with the ongoing investigation.
As Detective Waldron had said, this case was different. The procedures would be thorough, no way around it.
As for Elodie's own circumstances...
It was obvious: word was starting to get around. Even the older matriarch and the rest of the Silverstein family had caught wind of the news, despite living most of the year abroad. Calls cin, one after another.
Elodie had just finished a meeting when her grandmother phoned.
"Grandma?" she answered.
Her grandmother sounded surprised-delighted, even, though she tried to hide it. "Darling, why have you never toldabout your past? I heard about your competition from your great-aunt, not you! The Silverstein family really is blessed." Elodie poured herself a glass of water and listened quietly, a faint smile tugging at her lips as her grandmother's joy bubbled over.
"Your past achievements and this victory-theyre both wonderful news. It calls for a celebration!" her grandmother declared warmly.
"Chfor dinner tothe townhouse, your marital home. I'll cook myself. It's been ages since our family sat down together. And I just had sfresh seafood flown in-your favorites." Her grandmother sounded so happy, full of loving anticipation.
The marital home? Elodie's brow furrowed. She was about to refuse; that place had nothing to do with her anymore. It was Jarrod's space now, his and Sylvie's.

Her grandmother sighed, clearly worried about her working too hard, but pressed gently, "Just take the evening off for once, sweetheart. I'm already here in town. Won't you cby after work?" Elodie hadn't expected that her grandmother was already waiting.
She hesitated. Because of the divorce agreement, she hadn't told her family the truth. Drumming her fingers on the desk, she finally said, "Letcheck with Jarrod first, Grandma." Her grandmother didn't think much of it and agreed cheerfully.
Elodie called Jarrod.
He picked up after a few rings. Elodie got straight to the point: "Grandma wants us to cto Moonlight Garden tonight. Can you handle it?" After all, that house belonged to him and Sylvie now. He should be the one to deal with it.
There was a pause, sbackground noise fading as Jarrod composed himself. "What tdo you finish work? I'll cpick you up."
Elodie frowned. "Did you even hear me? I said Grandma wants usat Moonlight Garden." "I heard you," he replied, still casual. "What tshould I cget you?" She couldn't make sense of his reaction.
Maybe sensing her confusion, Jarrod's tone softened: "Grandma already mentioned it to me. She's so
proud of you-she's gone all out, cooking your favorite dishes at the ve townhouse. She's there now getting everything ready. Are you free tonight?"
Elodie didn't mind seeing his grandmother, after all, the old woman had shown her more kindness in three years than anyone was else. Especially since she anyone already waiting-it would be wrong to leave her alone.
It was just the house, Moonlight Garden, that felt strange now. But if Jarrod didn't care, why should she overthink it?
