Maynard knocked on the door. "Bryn, dinner's ready." Briony sat up and called toward the door, "Coming!" Turning back to her two children on the video call, she smiled. "Mommy's going to have dinner now. We'll chat more later, okay?" On the other end, Little Nina piped up, "Mommy, I think I just heard Mr. Maynard's voice. Are you with him?" "Yes, sweetheart, Mommy is working with Mr. Maynard." "Oh," Little Nina's eyes flickered with curiosity. "Mommy, Daddy called earlier. He said he's coming to see us tonight." Briony paused, surprised. "He's coming to see you? I thought he was picking you up to take you back to Southcreek Manor?" "Nope! Daddy just said he wants to visit us." Briony figured Stewart must have found stto spend with the kids. She didn't dwell on it. "Okay, Mommy knows. Have fun with Daddy, alright?" "Mommy," Little Nina pouted, "if Daddy wants to stay over tonight, is that okay with you?" Truthfully, Briony wasn't thrilled about Stewart spending the night. He was remarried, after all; what would people think about him staying at his ex-wife's house? But when she saw the hopeful look in Little Nina's eyes, she felt her resolve waver. After all, she wouldn't be htonight. If Stewart wanted to stay, so be it.

So Briony said, "If Mommy isn't home, you kids can decide." "Yay! Thanks, Mommy! Please be careful out there with Mr. Maynard. Little Nina loves you~" On the other end, little Masqueezed in, "Mommy, I love you too!" Briony's eyes crinkled with a smile as she looked at her two children. "Mommy loves you both." At seven o'clock, a black Bentley rolled up the driveway of Pearbrook Mansion. Stewart stepped out of the car, carrying bags filled with toys and snacks for the kids-and tucked among them, a matcha cake, Briony's favorite. The twins, hearing the car pull in, dashed out to greet him, barely able to contain their excitement. With both hands full, Stewart couldn't scoop the kids up right away.

Marlene, the housekeeper, cover and took the bags from him smiling "Mr. Wentworth, you bring so many things every tyou visit. The playroom downstairs can hardly hold any more toys." Stewart just laughed, "The kids love them." Marlene shook her head good-naturedly and carried the bags inside.

Freed up, Stewart bent down and scooped up both children, one in each arm, and carried them inside.

Carol, wearing a mask and cradling baby Lori who'd just finished her bottle, cdown the stairs.

When she saw Stewart, she greeted him respectfully.

Stewart gave her a brief nod, then asked casually, "Bryn's not back yet?" "Mommy went to Westerhaven with Mr. Maynard," Little Nina answered quickly. "She said they won't be back tonight." Stewart froze for a moment, caught off guard.

Little Nina looked up at him, feeling as if her daddy had turned to stone.

"Daddy, what's wrong?" He snapped out of it and managed a weak smile for his daughter. "Nothing, sweetheart. Daddy's fine." But even as he said it, Little Nina could see the sadness in his eyes.

Her heart ached for him. She reached out her tiny hand, wrapping it around hostarour to his finger, and tipped her head up to look at him earnestly. "Daddy, are you sad because you can't see Mommy tonight? Stewart swallowed hard, wanting to say no, but the words just wouldn't come.

Little Nina was now sure Daddy was

sad. She hurried to comfort him, patting his cheek gently. "Don't be e sad, Daddy. Mommy said, it's faining really hard where they are, so she and Mr. Maynard can't chtonight. But she'll be back first thing in the morning!"

Little Madidn't want Daddy to be sad either. He cover and added, "Daddy Mommy knows you're Mommyknows coming to see us. She already said it's okay for you to stay over tonight."
