Chapter 281 Attempted Kidnapping A flicker of excitement flickered across Jeremiah's face, but he quickly suppressed it.

Clearing his throat, he forced a warm smile and asked, "Where are the two people who were with you just now?" Zeke smirked, shaking his head. "No idea. Maybe they went to buy something." Elsa reached out to touch Zeke's head, but he swiftly dodged it, leaving her hand hanging awkwardly in mid-air. Still, she maintained her sickly sweet tone. "They're really irresponsible, aren't they? Leaving you here all alone... Aren't you afraid you'll get lost?" She leaned in closer, her voice turning coaxing. "Why don't you cwith us? We'll buy you whatever you want to eat. Anything you like." Hearing this, Eric and I exchanged glances. As expected, they were trying to take Zeke away. The motive was obvious they wanted to use him to force Mr. Simpson into signing with Jeremiah's company.

Zeke looked up, his face full of pretend innocence. "Really? That sounds amazing!" The next second, his expression dropped into a deadpan stare. "But no thanks. I'm not going anywhere with you." "Why?" Elsa frowned, clearly not expecting a flat-out rejection.

Jeremiah jumped in. "We're not going to just abandon you on the street, kid." Zeke didn't even bother to lift his head. "Still no. You both look ugly. I don't want to." Hearing this, Jeremiah inhaled sharply, and Elsa almost lost control of her fake smile. Right after that, a shadow of malice flashed across Jeremiah's face. "It's not up to you." He lunged forward, scooping Zeke into his arms. His expression suggested he was ready for a struggle, but Zeke remained surprisingly still.

Just as confusion flickered in Jeremiah's eyes, Eric and I silently approached.

Eric patted Jeremiah's shoulder, and when he turned around, Eric landed a solid punch square on his face.

Jeremiah grunted in pain, immediately loosening his grip.

Zeke slipped right out of his grasp and went straight into Eric's arms.

"Call the cops," Eric said to me, his voice as calm as ever.

Elsa ignored Jeremiah, who was still clutching his face. She rushed forward, her voice full of panic as she explained, "Jane! You've got it all wrong! We were just playing with the kid because he's cute. We didn't mean any harm!" Zeke, now safely sucking on the lollipop I bought for him earlier, said with righteous indignation, "Lies! They were trying to kidnap me." Elsa's eyes widened in horror.

I laughed and gently tapped Zeke's nose. "You really know your stuff, huh? Even calling it a kidnapping." Zeke puffed up proudly, tilting his chin up. "Of course! My mom taughtall about these things." He turned to Elsa. "Just because you talk in a soft voice doesn't mean you're not a bad person." With that, he stuck out his tongue at her.

Elsa's face stiffened and fell silent.

Not long after, the police arrived.

Jeremiah and Elsa were escorted away. Eric and I gave our statements before heading back to the Simpson residence with Zeke. As I left the police station, I glanced

through the glass partition and locked eyes with Jeremiah Even though couldn't hear him, I could see his lips move as he mouthed three words at me, "You'll regret this."

I simply shrugged, completely unfazed, and walked away. He was nothing now-merely a washed-up pathetic excuse of a businessman.

I'd love to see if he could even manage to stir up trouble in his current situation.

After dropping off Zeke, my entire body felt like it was falling apart.

Now I finally understood why Mr. Simpson had looked atwith such sympathy when we left in the morning.

It seemed Eric and I had essentially done them a huge favor today.

I had been looking forward to flopping onto my bed for smuch-needed sleep, but then my phone rang. I glanced at the screen-it was Jack.

I didn't even have to answer to know why he was calling. It was definitely about Elsa.
