Chapter 171 Lucas didn't refute Evelyn's words.
However, Evelyn noticed a subtle change in his demeanor. From a distance, he observed her, watching her every expression closely to gauge its truthfulness. But the silence between them was broken by his phone ringing.
It was a call from Bluezen.
He had initially intended to answer immediately but paused. He glanced at Evelyn before asking, "Can I take this call?" It was as if he were seeking her approval.
Evelyn didn't have the luxury to care about his attitude. The pain in her abdomen intensified, and she could feel cold sweat forming on her forehead. She barely managed to suppress the discomfort. In the dim light, her lips turned paler, and her breath becshallow as she nodded slightly.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtLucas turned to answer the call.
The voice on the other end was a man's. "Mr. Grant, Ms. Moore has been working on the data all day and hasn't been able to get it right. She refuses to leave work and hasn't eaten anything all day. It looks like she won't go huntil it's done..." Lucas frowned slightly.
Behind him, Evelyn was drenched in sweat. She almost didn't have the strength to grab the medicine in her bag by the door. She struggled to move. "Lucas." She wasn't sure who he was talking to, but Lucas seemed deep in thought and didn't hear her.
But Evelyn didn't dare risk her health. She could only muster the strength to reach out and grab Lucas' sleeve. But as soon as her hand touched him, Lucas ended the call. He suddenly turned around and bent down to grab the coat from the couch.
His movements were quick, and Evelyn's hand was unintentionally brushed aside as he grabbed the coat. He didn't seem to notice her state as he hurried out the door.
"I have something urgent. Just rest here and don't wait for me," he said as the door swung open and then closed behind him.
Evelyn stood there, her body swaying slightly as she stared at the empty doorway. Lucas had left in a hurry. Her face turned pale, but her expression remained blank as she quietly withdrew her gaze. She curled up on the couch, trying to minimize the pain gnawing at her insides.
She finally managed to get up after nearly 20 minutes. She dragged her heavy legs to the hallway cabinet. There, she opened her bag and quickly shoved the painkillers and targeted medication into her mouth, swallowing them dry.
Throughout the process, Evelyn didn't feel any negative emotions. She wasn't angry, upset, or resentful. She simply accepted the situation calmly. She returned to the couch, not caring where Lucas had gone.
The medicine took effect quickly, and she started to feel better. She washed her face with cold water to clear her mind. Calmly, she returned and picked up her phone.
She opened her chat box with Lucas and typed one last message to him. "You're free to buy as many rings and jewelry for Tiffany, but she can't have my mom's wedding ring. If you're willing to sell it, I'll pay whatever price you ask. If not, we'll divorce, and I'll have it returned toas part of our marital assets." As long as their divorce wasn't finalized, Evelyn had the right to reclaim anything Lucas had bought for Tiffany. She had never intended to use this method, but Lucas didn't leave her with any dignity.
She had just sat down when Sebastian sent her a message. "Can you contact Mr. Jenkins from TechNova Group? He still hasn't sent the data reports for the last project. Could you follow up and remind him?" Flying Seal Group was collaborating with Tech Nova Group. She had visited Technova Group with Justine before, and they had a group chat with Jacob and the employees.

To her surprise, Jacob replied with a voice message that said, "I'm really nat said, sorry, Ms. Beede've been held up with something today. I'll send the report in a bit." Evelyn didn't feel like listening to more excuses and typed a response. "Can you givea specific time?"
Jacob replied again. "Apologies, Ms.
Reed. I'm truly not making up m excuses. It's Ms Moore. Remember her? The one you met last tat our company? She's been working non-stop and hasn't eaten all day.
"Mr. Grant just cto the office, and he's concerned she'll overwork herself, so he asked us to m cin and help her with the adjustments. We're working extra hours. Please bear with us." Evelyn fell silent for a moment.
She understood now why Lucas had rushed off so urgently. It was because he was worried about Tiffany not eating and overworking herself.
She typed back. "Okay." It was then she realized that hunger strikes could be used not only against a mother but also against a partner. After replying to Sebastian, Evelyn weakly collapsed onto the couch. She was too drained to even walk back to the bedroom.
Even though the pain occasionally flared up, she still couldn't get used to it. It was particularly severe this time.
