2/2 My blood-soaked wedding dress had begun to stiffen as it dried, the once- pristine white lace now a grotesque reminder of how quickly happiness could shatter.
"I forgot my phone," I suddenly realized. "Sean, could you call David? Christopher's assistant? He should know what's happening." Sean nodded, pulling out his phone. He dialed the number and waited, his free hand resting supportively on my shoulder.
"David? It's Sean Shaw," he said when the call connected. "You need to cto Metropolitan Hospital right away. Christopher's been injured. He paused, listening. "I'll explain everything when you get here." After giving the address, he hung up.

"He wanted to know what happened. I told him we'd explain when he gets here." Sean sighed, running a hand through his hair. "No point doing it twice." Nearly everyone who passed us in the hallway did a double-take, staring at my ruined wedding dress with wide eyes. I must have looked like something from a horror movie-a blood-soaked bride waiting outside an emergency room, mascara streaked down her face.
"Angela, you should go home," Sean said gently. "Take a shower, change your clothes. You don't need to stay here. David and I can handle this." I shook my head firmly. "I'm not leaving." Something about Christopher's words had felt final, like a goodbye. The way he'd spoken-apologizing, asking for forgiveness-had an air of desperate last confessions. And beyond that, he was here because of me. That knife had been meant for me. If he died... I couldn't finish the thought.
I pulled out Sean's phone again and called Victoria. She answered immediately, concern evident in her voice. "The children are very worried," she said before I could even ask. "They're still awake, asking about Christopher." "Can I speak to them?" I asked.
Victoria put the phone on video, and Aria's tearful face filled the screen, Ethan's appearing beside her a moment later.
"Mommy, is Uncle Christopher going to be okay?" Aria asked, her voice small and frightened.
I forced a smile. "The doctors are taking care of him right now, sweetie. He'll be better soon." I swallowed past the lump in my throat. "He said to tell you both that he wants to bring you presents next the sees you." It was a lie, but a harmless one. Something to give them hope.
"Promise?" Ethan asked, his usually stoic face betraying his concern.

After reassuring the children a bit more, I told Victoria we probably wouldn't be htonight. She understood completely, promising to take good care of Aria and Ethan, Shortly after the call ended, Thomas arrived with a bag of clean clothes. Sean took them gratefully.
1/2 "You should change first," he suggested, nodding toward my dress. hat's... drawing a lot of attention."
I nodded, suddenly aware of how conspicuous I must look. In the bathroom, I peeled off the wedding е dress carefully, as if it might disintegrate in my hands. The blood had soaked through in places, leaving rust-colored stains on my skin.
As I stared at the ruined dress, the reality of everything that had happened crashed over me. My om wedding day, the day that was supposed to mark our fresh start, had ended with violence and blood Christopher-who had invited himself to my wedding after twice refusing to see me-had taken a knife meant forand might now be dying.
I folded the dress as best I could, my hands trembling. Looking at the stark bloodstains, I closed my eyes and whispered a prayer! hadn't said since childhood. "Christopher, you have to get better. You have to."
